The present study was performed to investigate the changes in the brain neurotransmitter and antioxidant levels in
Methanolic extract of Bauhinia racemosa treated mice by estimating the levels of monoamines such as Serotonin, Dopamine
and Nor-Adrenaline and enzymatic antioxidants including Superoxide dismutase, Catalase, Reduced glutathione, Glutathione
peroxidase and Lipid peroxidation. Furthermore, the effects of Bauhinia racemosa extract were compared to a known active
anxiolytic drug (Diazepam 2.5mg/kg, p.o). The extract was administered orally in two different doses of 150mg/kg and
300mg/kg for 7 days. Both the doses of B.racemosa extract treated mice shown significant (p<0.01) increase in the serotonin
and nor adrenaline level as well as significant increment (p<0.001) in enzymatic antioxidant levels and decreased dopamine
level in brain homogenate when compare to control group. This effect was comparable to that of the benzodiazepine
diazepam (2.5mg/kg p.o.). Thus the results indicate that methanolic extract Bauhinia racemosa is an effective anxiolytic
agent and act through serotonergic pathway.
