The study of the interaction between genetics and therapeutic drugs is variously called pharmcogenetics and
pharmacogenomics. The differences between the two are the initial approach of the science. Pharmacogenetics starts with an
unexpected drug response result and looks for a genetic a cause, while pharmacogenomics looks for genetic differences
within a population that explain certain observed responses to a drug or susceptibility to a health problem. The article
reviews the basic concepts of pharmacogenetic and pharmacogenomics to help pharmacist interrupt different approaches to
pharmacogenetic studies and pharmacogenetic discovery. The candidate gene association study and genomic wide
association study are the two most common approaches for pharmcogenetic study. However, there are certain factors that
influence the pharmacogenetic discoveries to patient care. These include cost, availability and interpretation of test.
Pharmacists being experts in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the drug they can lead the application of
pharmacogenetic and pharmacogenomics in clinical practice. Finally, pharmacogenetic and pharmacogenomics discoveries,
promote safe and effective use of medications by accurately predicting an individual’s drug response.
