Diabetes is considered as the risk factor for acute myocardial infarction. The purpose of this research was to assess the incidence and prevalence of diabetes as a risk factor for acute myocardial infarction in a secondary care hospital. This study was conducted for a time period of six months. Patients diagnosed with myocardial infarction, of either gender who were admitted in the secondary care hospital were included in our study. A total number of hundred patients were taken in this study. Majority of the patients, who had been covered on this study are among 50 -60 years old(43%). The patients were categorized as euglycemic, known diabetes and newly diagnosed diabetes. Out of 100 patients admitted with myocardial infarction, 36 patients has diabetes as a co-morbidity, 15 patients with diabetes had no prior history of myocardial infarction and 16 non diabetic patients had a prior history of myocardial infarction. The study shows the prevalence of diabetes as a predisposing factor for myocardial infarction. Maintaining the patients blood glucose level at normal range will prevent myocardial infarction and its recurrence in patients who already had myocardial infarction.
