Co-existence of OXA-types and AdeM genes in antibiotics resistant Urinary Tract Infection Acinetobacter baumannii

Author: ANFAL KHUDHAIR
Abstract: The target of this study was to evaluate the incidence of MATE family genes and blaOXA types in multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii cultured from patients endure urinary infection in Baghdad hospitals. Out of 150 samples, 24(16%) bacterial isolates were identified as A. baumannii, classified according to antibiotic resistance to three main types. The largest type was XDR 75% (18\24), followed by 16.6% (4\ 24) was MDR, while PDR represent the lowest number of isolates 8.3% (2\ 24). The presence of the MATE family genes was screened by PCR. The AdeL gene was detected in 15 out of 24 clinical isolates while AdeF and AdeH was detected in 10 out of 24 clinical isolates, and the lowest percentage was for AdeG gene represented in 6/24 clinical isolates. Intrinsic AdeM was detected in all isolates. In 14 isolates, the blaOXA-23gene was detected and represent the main expressed gene, among them , 6/14 and 2/14 isolates had blaOXA-48, blaOXA-69 resistance gene respectively. This suggests the possibility of higher usage of MATE family efflux pump genes in antibiotic resistance mechanism for local A. baumannii. Besides, the AdeM gene reveals their possible usage of that gene as a marker for detecting urinary tract infections resistance A. baumannii isolates .
