The present study was conducted, to evaluate the antioxidant activity of the aqueous extract of Samanea saman (Jacq.)
Merr. against carbontetrachloride (CCl4) induced liver toxicity in rats. The aqueous extract of Samanea saman (Jacq.)
Merr.was administered orally to the albino rats with hepatotoxicity induced by CCl4 (0.5ml/ 150g). Silymarin (25mg/kg) was
given as reference standard drug. The plant extract (250mg and 500mg/ kg b.w) were administered to the carbontetrachloride
(CCl4) treated rats for 21days. Levels of lipid peroxide and reduced glutathione and activity of glutathione reductase, glutathione-
S-transferase, glutathione peroxidase, Superoxide dismutase and catalase were evaluated. Oral administration of the
aqueous extract of Samanea saman (Jacq.) Merr. significantly normalized the levels of lipid peroxide and reduced glutathione.
Activity of glutathione reductase, glutathione-S-transferase, glutathione peroxidase, Superoxide dismutase and catalase
were also resumed to normal. Results obtained indicates the antioxidant properties of Samanea saman (Jacq.) Merr. against
carbontetrachloride (CCl4) –induced oxidative stress in rats.
