The present study was aimed to develop less viscous water-in-oil microemulsion for nasal delivery. Almond oil, tween 80
and span 80 were selected as oil phase, surfactant and co-surfactant respectively. Phase behaviour of almond oil/tween 80/span
80 has been studied. Several compositions from single phase region were selected, visually observed for phase clarity & stability.
These compositions were further evaluated for pH, conductivity, refractive index and viscosity. A least viscous, low
surfactant containing composition (water/almond oil/Smix as 10/45/45) (Smix is the mixture of Surfactant & Co-surfactant
used in the formulation) was chosen as the drug delivery system from clear water-in-oil single phase zone of pseudo ternary
system. Globule size of selected composition was determined by Malvern Zetasizer V2.0. Selected composition was loaded
with drug and mucoadhesive agent; chitosan. Comparative diffusion study confirms increase in drug release from mucoadhesive
microemulsion. Acute toxicity study results examined confirms non-toxic nature of formulation.
