Abstract:

Introduction:
Traditional medicine has served human beings effectively and in almost all disorders. Desmodium velutinum(Willd.) D.C. of family Fabaceae is a popular plant which has been used as traditional medicine for various ailments. Present review aims to congregate all available ethnomedicinal information and pharmacological activity on Desmodium velutinum.
Material and methods:
Information in the present study about the reported ethno botanical uses, pharmacological activities and phytochemical studies of Desmodium velutinum(Willd.) DC was compiled from books on ethnobotany available in the central library of I.P.G.T. and R.A., G.A.U, Jamnagar and research articles available on the internet. The obtained information is arranged in tabular format, with regards to various local names, as known by different tribes across India, name of the tribe and their area of presence, part used therapeutic indications, external and internal usage of the drug with individual references.
Result and Discussion:
The plant is abundantly available in Western Ghats, Orissa and West Bengal. It is used by 17 tribes/communities in India for ethnomedicinal uses. The plant is used to combat 18 disease conditions internally and 6 externally. It is most commonly found useful in diarrhoea, blood urination and bowel disorders. The most commonly used parts are leaves and roots.
Conclusion:
Present ethnobotanical review shows the multi-faceted use of Desmodium velutinum in varied aspects including its economical usage thus underlining its significance. Reported anti-diarrhoeal and anti-pyretic activities can be further strengthened through pharmacological and clinical studies to establish the ethnic claims like diarrhoea, fever, Urinary tract infections etc.
