Effect of Blue, Red and Green Colors on Blood Pressure and Heart Rate

Author: RACHMAT SUSANTO, ELLY NURAHMAH, ATI SURYA MEDIAWATI, SUTANTO PRIYO HASTONO
Abstract: Color is believed to affect human physiological responses. The aim of this study was to explore the effects of color on blood pressure and heart rate. An experimental design with pre- and post-test control group design was employed. The sampling technique was simple random sampling of hypertensive patients. The use of glasses with red, blue and green lenses was applied to 120 hypertensive patients. Analysis was carried out to determine the effect of color on blood pressure and heart rate. Blood pressure was significantly different in three groups with F (2,117) = 65.68, p = .000. In Tukey HSD, the average score for Group 1 Blue (M =3.16, SD = 5.05), Group 2 Red (M = - 4.50, SD = 2.98), Group 3 Green (M = 4.48, SD = 2.92). At Results for heart rate were F (2,117) = 6.99, p = .000 with Tukey HSD for Group 1 Blue (M = 2.4, SD = 4.74), Group 2 Red (M = - 8.00, SD = 6.66), Group 3 Green (M = 2.72, SD = 2.45). Post-Hoc comparisons for all dependent variables using the Tukey test show that Blue is not different from Green but both are different from Red, meaning blue and green have the same effect while red is the opposite. It was concluded that compared to blue, green is better in lowering blood pressure and heart rate while red increases both.
