The present study evaluated the fermented and unfermented seeds of Kluwek (Pangium edule) for bioactive antimicrobial activity against S. aureus and E. coli by agar well diffusion assay, and antioxidant activity by DPPH free radical scavenging assay. The bioactive constituents were isolated by bioactivity-guided separation method with combination of various solvents on normal and reversed phase column chromatography, and the structure of active compounds were determined by spectroscopic methods. Four compounds isolated from Kluwek (P. edule) were identified as three long chain hydroxyated fatty acid derivatives 1-3, and a furaldehyde derivative 4. Then, all compounds were evaluated for antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli together with antioxidant activity with DPPH assay. The results showed that compounds 1-4 were active with compound 4 being the most active with inhibition zone values at 100 ppm of 19 and 17 mm against S. aureus and E. coli, while the EC50 was 9.18 ppm, respectively. The study demonstrated that the fermented and unfermented seeds of Kluwek contained antibacterial and antioxidant constituents that support its use as phytomedicine and a potential source of new drugs to control infectious diseases and oxidative damage.
