Among the three microvascular complications of diabetes (nephropathy, retinopathy and neuropathy), diabetic
nephropathy is a major cause of kidney failures. This review gives an insight into all the pathways and mechanisms
which have been implicated in causing kidney damage due to diabetes. Both metabolic and haemodynamic factors play
a role in the disease. Various mechanisms like activation of protein kinase C, polyol pathway, etc lead to nephropathy.
The review also summarises some of the newer therapeutic options for the treatment of the disease.
