Comparison of rapid screening methods for the detection of drug abuse; Colorimetric tests, Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC), Ultraviolet radiation

Abstract: Introduction: Drug addiction is one of the problems of human society and it is currently spending a great deal of money on governments and international societies to combat it. According to reports of mortality, it is one of the most common causes of death in the world. Many efforts are being made to prevent and treat addiction. The aim of this study was to compare the rapid screening methods consist of Colorimetric tests, Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC), Ultraviolet radiation in the detection of drug abuse. Materials and Methods: In this study, 10 samples of opioids and drugs discovered by the Islamic Republic of Iran Police and found in the forensic laboratory were randomly selected. First, the color changes of each sample were recorded by the researcher using the reagents used in this research. Samples of heroin, methamphetamine, MDMA, morphine, methadone, diazepam, in acidic solution and dissolve the hash in ethanol and phenobarbital in methanol, then put in cuvette and then put in a spectrophotometer. Each of the 10 samples was exposed to ultraviolet (UV b) radiation and the reflection wavelength was recorded by the researcher. Finally, each of the 10 samples was placed in chromatographic tanks and the chromatographic results were recorded by the researcher. Results: According to the results, all three methods; chromatography (TLC), colorimetric test and UV are effective and efficient methods for screening of abused substances. Ultraviolet radiation is a low-cost and fast method. However, according to the results of this study, it is not sufficiently accurate to differentiate all the materials, which is due to the interference of reflection wavelengths in some materials. The colorimetric method is an effective, accurate and low cost method which, according to the results of this study, can be used as the preferred method of rapid screening. Chromatography also has a high accuracy in detecting substances, but due to its high cost and time, it is not a preferred method for rapid screening. Conclusion: According to the results, all three methods; chromatography and color test and UV are effective and efficient methods for screening of abused substances but color test is an effective, accurate and low cost method, according to the results of this study, it can be used as the preferred method of rapid screening.
