Prevalence Of Urinary Incontinence and its Impact on Quality of Life Among Elderly In Kanchipuram District

| Abstract:

In view with the evolution of modern medicine and advancement in the health care providing sectors, mortality
rates has reduced significantly, the consequence of which lead to rapidly increasing geriatric population. It has been
estimated that within 2025 to 2050 the strength of the elderly population would be doubled to 1.6 billion
throughout the world; where the total population will show a rise of only 34%. Urinary incontinence is a condition
which is not directly affects the life of the people. After obtaining the ethical committee approval, A community
baesd cross sectional study was planned with 326 participants selected by multistage random sampling at the field
practice area of tertiary care hospital And assessed by semi-structured questionnaire. The data collected were
entered in the excel sheet and analysed using epi-info version 21. Chi square test was performed to assess the
association between the factor. The urinary incontinence was one of the prevailing health related issue in the
community which is mostly unnoticed. The male to female ratio was 1:1.06, 152 (46.6%) were affected because of
incontinence in the community. Males were more affected than the females. The co morbid condition like diabetes,
hypertension, COPD , bronchial asthma were compared with the urinary incontinence. Substance abuse practice
like alcohol/ smoking was also associated with the prevalence of urinary incontinence and the quality of life. In this
work focuses to assess the prevalence of urinary incontinence among elderly population in the community and
assess the impact of urinary incontinence on quality of life.
