Risk factors associated with PIH: Adjusted odds ratios by multiple logistic regression analysis

Author: SRINIVAS , MURALI. R
Abstract: An important risk factor for PIH is socio-economic status because it indirectly reflects the micro and macro nutrient status of the antenatal mother, educational status of the mother and income of the family. Some of the risk factors associated with developing of hypertension during pregnancy among pregnant women found in the present study were more than half of the population with PIH belong to age group of less than 20 years (50.1%), greater proportion of more than half of PIH mothers belong to joint families (53.2%), about one fourth of total PIH mothers were illiterates and completed high school (25.5% and 25.5% respectively), more than half of mothers with PIH were unemployed (80.9%) and upper middle class (76.6%), about more than half of the pregnant women were primigravidae (66%) belonging to second trimester (72.3%) and used family planning methods for spacing child births (66.0%), more than 3/4 of the antenatal mothers with PIH had a previous history of hypertension (87.3%), more than half of the pregnant women had a history of hypertension in the family (70.2%) having sedentary lifestyle (75.5%), around half of the PIH mothers consume high salt (72.3%), oil fried foods (66.0%) and junk foods (55.3%) and around one fourth of the cases of PIH were having BMI =18 kg/m th (27.7%). These risk factors showed statistically significant association with PIH. About more than 3/4 2 of the antenatal mothers had edema during pregnancy (91.5%) and had moderate form of hypertension (66.0%). On multiple logistic regression analysis, significant independent determinants for PIH were variables such as parity, consumption of oil fried foods, salt intake, family history of hypertension, family planning methods used and physical activity of pregnant women. A cross sectional study was done for a period of one year among antenatal mothers attending the outpatient department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of chettinad hospital and research institute, Chennai with the objectives to estimate the prevalence of pregnancy induced hypertension among antenatal mothers and to assess the risk factors associated with PIH.
