The photoprotection of Jamblang Fruit (Syzygium cumini(L.) skeels) ethanolic extract as sunscreen by determining sun protection factor

Author: , ZAINUR RAHMAN HAKIM, ARIF BUDIMAN
Abstract: Purpose : Exposure to excessive sunlight on the skin make skin damaged. Previous studies have developed natural ingredients for producing skin-protective agents This research aimed to demonstrate the ability of Jamblang fruit (Syzygium cumini (L.) skeels) ethanolic extract as sunscreen by determining the value of Sun Protecting Factor (SPF). Material and Method: This study was conducted by measuring the absorbance of each solution concentration in the range of UV wavelength 290-320 nm and the SPF value was calculated. Result: Based on the calculation of SPF value will increase along with the increase of extract level shown at the concentration of 500 ppm Jamblang fruit extract gives SPF value of 12.5995 which is categorized as maximum protection. Conclusion: we can conclude the Jamblang fruit has potential as sunscreen properties to protect from bad exposure of sunlight. Preservation of jamblang plants as the treasure of plants from Indonesia's original sunscreen needs to be encouraged
