Chitosan Derivatives and Their Application in Pharmaceutical Fields.

Abstract: Natural polysaccharides are widely being studied as a carrier material for drug delivery because of its non-toxic, biodegradable nature. Among them, chitosan has been studied extensively in drug delivery and biomedical fields. Chitosan has found its application as a support material for gene delivery, cell culture, and tissue engineering. Recently, chitosan is being modified to obtain novel biomaterial for controlled drug delivery applications. This article provides an overview of the synthetic procedures of chitosan derivatives and their applications with special attention being put on controlled drug delivery and biomedical engineering.
