Abstract:

Pharmacognostic standardisation of the fresh, powdered and anatomical sections of the roots of Xanthium strumarium
(linn.). was carried out to determine its macro- and microscopical characters and also some of its quantitative standards. The
root usually Cylindrical, Branches Profuse in shape and slightly branched, rough with short hairs. Internally roots shows the
presence of epidermis, trachieds, periderm, vessels, cortex, phloem, meta xylem, proto xylem, primary xylem, secondary
xylem, degenerated cortical cell, endodermis, branch trace initial and ray cells. The chemo-microscopy revealed the presences
of Fibres, Lateral wall pits, perforation plate, Tail, Vessel elements, Xylem fibres and Xylem parenchyma. Physicochemical
evaluation includes ash values, extractive values and moisture content was evaluated. These findings will be useful
towards establishing pharmacognostic standards on identification, purity, quality and classification of the plant, which is
gaining relevance in plant drug research
