To ascertain the potential of antioxidants from the fruits of 15 different species of the family Cucurbitaceae were examined in aqua-metanol (20:80) and aqueous extract by using 2-2- diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and ferrous chelating ability (FCA). In addition, total phenolic content (TPC) was also measured by Folin Ciocalteu. Among the cucurbits, Momordica dioica Roxb. ex Willd exhibited significantly higher antioxidant activity in all the three assays and TPC compared to other species, whereas lowest in Cucurbita maxima Duch. A highly significant positive correlation (P?0.05) was found among antioxidant activities evaluated in different cucurbits in the present study. Thus, the fruits of all the selected cucurbits are promising source of natural antioxidants.
